ViZ Laboratory for Visual Culture presents a synthesis of works by Fuyuhiko Takata. The eruptive visual fairytales crafted by Fuyuhiko Takata operate as subversive Haiku poems: Punches against the romantic idealization of love, dislocations of patterns of symphonic music and ballet, subversive re-enactments of Disney’s sentimentalist recuperation of gender. Fuyuhiko Takata’s crafty ingenuity embraces the narrative qualities introduced by the selfie stick. Inhabiting a bedroom (the artist’s fantasy lab), Fuyuhiko Takata’s heroes draw from the bl (Boy’s love) subgenre of Japanese manga to cannibalize cardinal/colonial depictions of eros, longing, and togetherness. The nymphs fail to seduce the faun, the cupid is an authoritarian sadist, the long-haired Rapunzel causes devastating earthquakes, and the little mermaid makes a messy blood-bath.

Screened works: Love Exercise (2013/2019), Afternoon of a faun (2015-2016), Cambrian Explosion (2016), Dream Catcher (2018/2019)
