Threnodies : Reflections on the merchant, the geographer and the snake in Antoine de Saint Exupery´s Little Prince

td1

A video installation at Monodrome, the 3rd Athens Biennale, by Kostis Stafylakis and Vana Kostayola (KavecS), 2011

Threnodies were filmed just after the end of the occupation of Syntagma square, in 2011, by the greek indignados (aganaktismenoi). The film reflects on the ominous neo-patriotic discourse that traversed greek society by the time of the movement. Based on three characters from Exupery’s “Little Prince”, the film unfolds by introducing the figures of the merchant (reciting nationalist and anti-semitic statements made by popular greek composer Mikis Theodorakis), the geographer (an intellectual struggling with the writings of Walter Benjamin on “Violence”) and a snake (the ghost of Joseph Beuys) appearing on a stage left behind by the greek indigados.
